The antagonist in The Life Changer by Khadija Abubakar Jalli is arrogance. Pride and arrogance are the forces which worked against Salma in the whole story as she faced various misfortunes caused by these forces.

Pride and arrogance were her inward qualities which she possessed. In order words, Salma’s pride arrogant qualities served as her flaws which automatically worked against her. It could also be said that Salma had her success and failure at the tip of her fingers.

Pride and arrogance are evident first in her discussion with one of the lecturers who interviewed her during her registration where she described the lecturers as being greedy and corrupt and they if she wants anything from them, she could offer just a token to get it. She also likened the lecturers to the police who can accept as little token as 2,000-3,000 Naira to gain their attention. Some may argue that she was right about the point she made but the manner of presentation is nothing to write home about.

Pride also caused Salma to see her roommates as less classic and sophisticated girls. She did not see them as her class at all as she thought she was above them.

She was carried away by pride when she turned down Habib’s proposal when she actually wanted him. She did this as a way of increasing her class in the university. To her, turning down a rich politician’s proposal is not ordinary.

Other things might have also worked against Salma but she is the major cause of her misfortunes because right from time, she did the wrong thing which lands her to one sad situation or the other.
